Robert Dwyer Jr was driving home from a class at Penn State University when he heard on the radio that his politician father had been shot at a televised press conference.

He didn’t know if his father was dead or alive, if he’d been attacked or had shot himself.

It was 11am EST on January 22, 1987 when Budd Dwyer, hosting a meeting for the media where he had been expected to resign, gave a rambling speech, took out a Smith and Wesson .357 revolver, put it in his mouth and pulled the trigger.
